I strongly believe that Intermittent Fasting is the tool that has given me the results I have achieved in my weight loss journey. I only eat in an 8 hour period – 12pm-8pm. I have my first meal of the day at 12pm and my last meal at 8pm – there are some days where I only eat in a 6 hour window (1pm-7pm). I also do a couple 24 hour fasts a week for example, I ate Dinner last night at 8pm and I won’t eat again until 8pm tonight; this can also be known as the OMAD method (One Meal A Day). During my fasting period, I only drink water and black coffee and occasionally throw in some herbal teas such as, green tea, peppermint tea and chamomile tea. Being a Christian woman my fasting is also spiritual so I believe that is why it is fairly easy for me to do – I focus on God instead of food. In saying that, you don’t have to be spiritual in order for IF to work for you; there are many people who have adopted this way of eating and have had great success. I have done a lot of research on IF and it’s basis is Fed State Vs. Fasted State…the best way I can explain it in simpler terms is that when you are in the Fasted State your body needs to draw on something for energy so if you are not eating it will draw on your stored fats, so essentially your body is “eating itself away” lol great picture I know, but I love explaining it like that because it gives you an awesome visual. And the reason a LCHF Diet is essential when doing IF, is because if you are not consuming a lot of carbs your body must feed on your stored fat, whereas if you are consuming a lot of carbs your body feeds on the stored glucose, that carbs produce, for energy so it doesn’t give your body a chance to get into the fat-burning stage. Once, you start doing it regularly your body will adapt and you will get used to it, thats when it will just become the norm for you. Now, in saying this there are some days where I listen to my body and I will eat breakfast or I will eat my first meal of the day a lot earlier because I am hungry. The thing I have learned is that it isn’t about living by the clock, it is about listening to your body. The key to fasting is WATER! You must drink plenty of water throughout the day. I try to drink between 2-3 litres a day. The rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces, daily. For example, when I weighed 94kgs (207 pounds) I should have been drinking 103 ounces (half of weight in pounds) of water which worked out to be 3 litres. I am now 72kgs (158 pounds) so I should be drinking 79 ounces of water daily, that is 2.3 litres.
